Made a run to the market for day 8 of 3#30daysofbiking. I went to go pick up some ginger root to put my “new to me” juicer into action. My mother had given me the juicer quite some time ago and I decided to start using it regularly to complement my “new to me” Vegan lifestyle. The taste was amazing, though the yield seemed a bit low all in all I really liked it. After I actually drank the juice the yield was more then sufficient. It’s getting over the super size mentality that is crucial, as well as the healthy aspect and benefits that come from raw fresh fruit and vegetables. The juicer does seem a bit wasteful in the aspect that I must find something to do with the leftovers. I might use them in a newly started compost pile or hunt the internet for options as I’m sure there is plenty. I may in the future opt for just blending the stuff up completely as then I will get full benefits of the foods.

This bike is actually my hand me down to daughter

The juicer, and final drink. DELICIOUS!
Almost a year ago I set out to do what to me at the time was my longest ride since I had began cycling about a 1.5 years ago. I posted about it here and basically rode the 100k non-stop at an average of 15mph. I thought I was pretty hot shit lol. Getting to know other cyclist over the last year and growing myself as a cyclist I now know otherwise. Either way I didn’t want to miss out on a chance to see where I stand a year later. Once I seen the Pedal Fest 2010 was coming up I registered quickly and look forward to riding. I normally don’t do fund raising rides because that just isn’t my thing. But this is a ride where some of my entry fee is donated (this I’m ok with) and there is no minimum to ride.
I probably weighed a little less last year then this year but the bike difference will be huge.
Last year I had used my GT Transeo, awesome bike and I miss it but I bet it weighed every bit of 40+ LBS. =>>
This year I will be riding my road bike as well as I have learned better riding posture and breathing techniques. Just tonight I jogged almost 2 miles at about 5.5 miles mph with my mouth closed. Sure it’s a slow pace but I do it to work on keeping a separation of my mind, breathing and my physical exertion. I feel it works when I’m riding because if I start to spin out and my breathing gets off, I feel fatigue a lot easier. The ride is this Sunday and I will track it and make a post ab
out it. Crossing my fingers for an 18 mph avg. Wish me luck!! Also on a good note Cliff Bars to the best of my knowledge are Vegan so I will be able to use the same fuel I did last year.
<==This years ride..(with sti upgrade not shown) Don’t make fun of my aero bars they cost me all of 10 bux.
I have a few goals to work towards this next 10 months or so.
I have been fairly successful in a weight loss quest but have gained back about 10lbs. I started out at 207 got down to as low as 157 but hovered at 160 for a while then over the course of last year I got lazy. I am at 170 pretty solid right now. I’m putting this on paper so to speak that I will try my hardest to get to 150 over the course of the next 3 months. This is not an option for me I have to finish what I started.
After riding the Flint Hills Death Ride I really. really want to ride in the Dirty Kanza 200 race.(200 miles in gravel through flint hills in 1 day) I have plenty of time to save and get a decent 29er to ride gravel on. I really like riding the gravel over road these days. I also found I like my mtb over my cyclocross bike for the gravel as well due to the handling and comfort. So a 29er would be all the better.
I am also just crazy surprised on how far I have some cycling in general. I did just start cycling again since a kid last Feb(2009). It’s been a little longer then a year now and I feel pretty decent about my progress. The thing for me I need to get out of my head is lately I have got it in my if I can’t go get at least 50 miles in then I usually just skip a ride all together. This is stupid who do I think I am. I need to get the high intensity 15-20 milers back into my daily grind if I think I’m going to lose the rest of this weight. I have stopped commuting to work since switching shifts and usually too tired to ride home afterward. I love riding and need to be doing more so.
Last but not least as far as news on a life change I have flipped and gone Vegan It has been a little over two weeks now and my desire to eat any kind of meat is, well its gone. Originally I told myself I would still eat fish but when pondering the thought it actually just doesn’t sound appealing. I am not going to turn this blog into a animal rights blog but this will be my lifestyle here on out and my posts may reflect it time to time.
I guess this post was just as much for me as anyone. I’m drawing my line in the sand and committing to a few things here over this next year.
See you on the road
